Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a bacteria that can be found in the vagina or rectum of healthy adult women. We can significantly reduce the chance that your baby acquires GBS by testing you in pregnancy and treating you during labour. The test involves swabbing the vagina and the rectum and sending the sample to a lab, where a culture is analyzed for any presence of GBS. If it is positive you will receive antibiotics during labour. We will give you more information should this end up pertaining to you.
